Shift 4.0 Just Launched: Focused Web Tabs, Smart Links & More!

We’re on a mission to make you the architect of your own productive workstation—beautifully designed, built by you. Today, we’re excited to unveil a suite of new features that do just that.

We know that when it comes to the way we work, there’s no “one size fits all.” Do you turn to Asana to manage your list of to-dos? Or maybe you prefer to kick it old school with post-its. Regardless of what your workflow looks like, one thing we know for sure is that you’re not made from a mold, so why should your digital workstation be?

Years ago, we envisioned a future where you can re-arrange, tailor and customize your workstation so that it’s just right for you. So, in December 2016, we embarked on our mission to make working on desktop more intuitive and productive than ever before. Enter Shift.

Shift just launched its newest feature set including Web Tabs, Smart Links, and more features to upgrade the way you work.

What started as a side-of-the-desk passion project has evolved into a movement of its own—with thousands joining us on our pursuit of a more productive way to work. And, we couldn’t be more thrilled!

From humble beginnings to a scaleup headed for the stars, our commitment to our cause has never wavered—to build the workstation of the future. So, for the better part of a year, we’ve been working behind the scenes to develop a new set of features to upgrade the way you work.

We’re talking better customizations, greater flexibility, and some pretty snazzy new features that we think you’re going to really like. Starting today, you’ll be able to access the web from inside Shift, toggle back and forth between your most recently-used apps, and generally have more control over how your Shift behaves.

Let’s get into it, shall we?

Focused Web Tabs: A New Way to Search

Whether you’re checking the weather before running to your next meeting, Googling directions to an after-work event, or surfing the web for design inspiration, the web plays a huge role in how we work every day. Starting today, you’ll enjoy browser access from right inside Shift.

We’re calling it Focused Web Tabs, and it’s a new way to search the web without breaking your flow. With Chrome-like capabilities, you can access Google Docs in a Web Tab, perform key research or generally browse the web, all from inside Shift. In addition, if you receive curated email newsletters, you can now open up links from these newsletters right in Shift without ever leaving your email client!

The best part? Web Tabs are organized by account, so you can keep your work and personal research separate and organized.

The Quickest Switch

Dear Keyboard Shortcut Fans, this one is for you.

You can now cycle windows, check notifications and switch between accounts with the latest addition to our list of custom keyboard shortcuts. It’s great for quickly toggling between your top apps and accounts without lifting your fingers off the keyboard.

Take it for a spin:

Mac: Command + `

Windows: Control + Tab

Smart Links

Starting today, you’re able to customize how links behave in Shift. Cool, but what does that look like in reality? Glad you asked.

Let’s say that you receive an email about a task update from Asana. You’ll now be able to choose where that link opens—in your Asana app in Shift, in Web Tabs, or in an external window. The choice is yours!

Set your preferences, and Shift will remember them going forward. Pretty nifty!
